Not only is this Australian city close to Queensland’s top attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef or Kuranda Rainforest, but it also does a wonderful job when it comes to entertaining its visitors. Families who are just transiting Cairns in their way to other attractions will not be disappointed is they choose to stay here a day or two: there are plenty of fun activities in Cairns for the whole family to enjoy:

Swimming

Swimming is a very popular sport all over Australia, but there are few other places that can offer such a great diversity of environments as Cairns. From public pools to lagoons and mountain rivers, Cairns offers the most amazing swimming experiences. Thus, the Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon is a huge, free entrance swimming pool in central Cairns, offering numerous children activities and safeguard service. Those willing to adventure into the wilderness can also try the Crystal Cascades just outside Cairns or Lake Tinaroo.

Playing in the water

Cairns also happens to have one of the best playgrounds in the country: Muddy’s Playground. This is the one and only playground where children are free to get dirty wet and splash around without the risk of being scolded. In addition to ankle-deep water, the campground offers plenty of distractions, as well as a special parent’s area where the adults can chat over a coffee.

Horse Riding

Horse riding is another fun activity that you and your family can enjoy in Cairns. Horse riding tours are tailored for every age and every level, so all your family members can enjoy. There are several equestrian centers in and around the city, but it is ultimately your choice weather you want to explore the Australian bush or ride on the beach at sunset.

Not only is skating an activity suitable for the whole family, but it’s also a very enjoyable way to exercise. Also, the Cairns Recreation Center, allegedly the largest facility of this kind in Australia, hosts regular thematic skating parties, so you can dress up and get funky with retro music and disco lights.

Ballooning

We cannot mention Cairns without mentioning hot air ballooning, one of the most popular leisure time activities in the area. Cairns climate is ideal for balloon riding, which is why you’ll often see colorful balloons floating above Cairns’ picturesque vicinities. With the single disadvantage that you’ll have to get up really early in the morning, hot air ballooning is a terrific experience: you’ll get fun, adventure, and see wonderful panoramas in the same time!
