Aussies are well-known for their outdoorsy lifestyle and their passion for sports. You can blame it on the warm Australian climate, which makes a nature walk look appealing and bearable even in mid January. But no matter what the reason, the truth is that Australia has often proved to be a brilliant sports events host, which might explain the high number of international sports events that take place here every year. Some of Australia’s biggest annual sports events, which I present in today’s post, are watched by millions of people all over the world, which tells a lot about their size and importance, I believe. Let’s see which they are:

The Australian Open, one of the world’s four grand slam tennis tournaments, takes place in Melbourne at the beginning of every year. Tennis enthusiasts from all over to world travel to Melbourne to enjoy the summery days and see their favorite tennis players compete. Being such an important sports event, the Australian open is far from being confined to the Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, the two hosting tennis courts: concerts, parties and cultural events precede and succeed the competition, creating a holiday atmosphere.

Australian Grand Prix (Formula 1)

Another important annual sports events which takes place in Melbourne is the Australian Grand Prix – a Formula 1 competition. The March event always generates a lot of excitement, as the Australian race is also the one to start a new competition season. Champion Formula 1 drivers will line up at Albert Park Circuit for a deafening car race, and use the best of their skills to gain an early start in this popular tournament.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

People find the most interesting ways to celebrate, but few are as spectacular as this traditional yacht competition taking place in the second day of Christmas. As it falls in the middle of the Austral summer, Christmas is an ideal time to go out for Aussies. And what other occasion to show off a state-of-the-art yacht and use your sailing skills than a race between Sydney and Hobart?

Melbourne Cup

One of the dearest national sports competitions for Australians, the Melbourne Cup is also one of the oldest. The climax of this event is represented by the horse race at Flemington Hippodrome, but there will by many other connected events stretching along September and November. The Melbourne Cup is an occasion of great pride for the citizens of Melbourne, so the atmosphere will be very similar that that of a big holiday or festival.

Gold Coast Marathon

Gold Coast is another important event host in Australia. The pleasant July weather transforms Gold Coast from a beach holiday destination into an ideal marathon venue. Thousands of people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds fill up the streets of Gold Coast to take place in Australia’s most popular marathon competition.
